From class list to ready-to-go groups.
Start with the people in the room, choose a group size, then review the result before sharing it. Here is a complete example for a class of 24.
1. Add your class
Paste one name per line into the roster. Use the shortest names that everyone will recognize. If two people share a name, add an initial or another clear label so you can tell them apart in the groups.
Choose Use these names to open attendance. Give the class a name, such as “Tuesday workshop,” and choose Save class if you will use it again. Saved classes stay in this browser on this device. For a shared classroom computer, use initials or temporary labels and remove the saved class when you finish.
2. Mark who is here
Uncheck absent people before generating groups. They remain in the roster for next time but are left out of this round. Check the present count against the room before you continue. Choose Save class again if you want to keep the updated attendance.
3. Choose count or maximum size
Use Number of groups when you have a fixed number of tables, stations or projects. Use Max people per group when the activity limits how many people can work together. Group Your Class spreads people as evenly as possible.
| People present | Your setting | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 24 | 6 groups | 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4 |
| 23 | 6 groups | 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 3 |
| 23 | Maximum 5 per group | 5, 5, 5, 4, 4 |
A maximum of five does not fill every group to five. It creates enough groups to stay under the limit, then evens them out. This avoids leaving one person alone when a more even split is possible.
4. Generate, then review
The names are shuffled randomly. The tool does not know students’ skills, friendships, support needs or previous partners, and it does not enforce together/apart rules. Random groups can repeat a pairing from an earlier round.
Choose Make groups and review the result with your activity in mind. To adjust it, choose Swap people, select one person, then someone in another group to swap their places. A swap keeps group sizes intact. Choose Undo if you change your mind.
Make your adjustments before showing the room. Repeatedly regenerating in front of a class can make the process feel arbitrary, even when each shuffle is random.
5. Share the finished groups
Choose Present to give the group list more room on a projector. Check the screen from the back of your room and increase browser zoom if needed. Choose Exit presentation to return to the controls.
Choose Copy to copy the groups as text for a lesson plan, CSV to download the assignments, or Print for a paper copy. Printed and downloaded names leave browser storage: choose the destination deliberately and keep only the copies you need.
Ready for the next session
Return in the same browser and choose Saved classes to reopen your class. Recheck attendance before making a new set of groups. Browser data can be cleared, private browsing may discard saved data, and another device will not have your classes. Choose Back up class to download a roster file, then Import backup to bring that file into another browser.
